A group of folks decided to settle the age-old question: who really wins in a race, a tortoise or a rabbit?
Most people know the story of “The Tortoise and the Hare,” even if they haven’t heard of Aesop’s Fables, where the story comes from. These fables date all the way back to ancient Greece, but the lesson of the tortoise and the hare has stuck with us.
In the story, the hare is confident in his speed and takes a nap during the race, thinking he’s got plenty of time to beat the slow-moving tortoise. But while the hare sleeps, the tortoise keeps going at his slow and steady pace, eventually winning the race. The story teaches that being consistent and determined can beat speed and arrogance.
This group decided to test it out in real life, using a rabbit instead of a hare. The race started, and just like in the fable, the rabbit darted ahead, taking an easy lead. But it didn’t last long. The rabbit stopped frequently, seeming more interested in its surroundings than the race. Meanwhile, the tortoise kept moving, slow but steady.
In the end, the rabbit didn’t bother to rush to the finish line, and the tortoise won—just like in the story.
People watching the race couldn’t help but laugh and cheer when they realized the tortoise was going to win. One person commented, “The legend is true,” while others joked about how this answers one of life’s great questions.
Looks like sometimes, real life plays out just like the stories we’ve known forever.
